I like seeing people who are enthusiastic about their jobs, no doubt. Especially at the doctor's office, it's nice to deal with someone who's cheerful and friendly rather than cold and surly.

But when the phlebotomist pokes at the veins on the back of your hand and says "Ooh! look at those - yum yum!"... I have to think that maybe some people are enjoying their work just a little bit too much.

Maybe I should look into phlebotomy as a new career. >:)

But then I think you're 'yum yum' all over, not just your veins.

I do that. Since we learned how to start IVs, I'll be walking down the street and see someone with good veins and just start practically salivating over the idea of starting an IV on them.

Oh, it's not just phlebotomists that do that--- nurses are especially prone to admiring veins.

My wife (a RN) works on a neonatal intensive care unit, and frequently has to start IVs on preemies--- imagine trying to stick a needle into a piece of angel hair pasta, basically.

I dropped in on her at work one day?

Two other nurses introduced themselves, and as I shook hands, one said "Diane was right, he does have a huge vein right there."
